Ruins on the mountaintop
Lens: Pentax FA 77 Limited Camera: Pentax K-1 Photo Location: Mount Evans, CO ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/90s Aperture: F9

Just west of Denver is Mount Evans, the other Colorado Fourteener with a drivable route to the 14,000-ft + summit. Newcomers might be puzzled by these shapes and windows that seem to grow from the rock. This is the ruin of the Crest House, a futuristic snack bar, curio shop and lounge that was built here in 1941. It was destroyed by fire in 1979, shortly after I arrived in town. When I drove up, a year later, it was a mess. I found a souvenir shot glass in the rubble. Now it's s stabilized ruin, with restrooms and interpretive exhibits. On the ridge above are outbuildings for an astronomical observatory. It's a busy mountain!

Interesting history and structure. Glad it still serves a purpose. Nice capture. Thanks for posting and providing history.

Looks like a really interesting place. Pity though, it's quite far from my location...

Nice sharp detail and color. I like the sharp contrast between the manmade structure and sky. Pleasing lighting on the face of the structure.

Time for something different

This was a contrary composition for me. Typically I'd find a strong subject and place it near (but not at) the center of the frame. This time I put all the interesting details at the edges, and the center is kind of empty. Did you ever get up there when it was open, Allan?
