Actually they are working on keeping the V8 sound while having an electric motor due to safety reasons

(I feel sales would also have something to do with that)

Yes you are absolutely right , also the need of vision impairment people must be taken under consideration.
In Europe there are many very narrow streets and vehicle needs to be able to make some noises.
There is a growing concept of having a choice, you could choose the noise your car is making , something like a ring ton on smart phone.
There is also some work being conducted on some kind of proximity warning devices / App's so people could detect incoming vehicle.
