Big Sister, Little Sister
Lens: 15-30mm f/2.8 Camera: K-1 Mk I Photo Location: Joshua Tree National Park, California

Joshua Tree National Park, Mojave Desert. JTNP is my spiritual home for photography, where I began photographing at night. This was the last evening of a 1856-mile night photography safari with Tim Little, Mike Cooper, and George Loo, and George the monkey. Illuminated during the exposure by a full moon and a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device. Thank you.

Stunning! Is that Polaris just outside the frame in the top right corner, judging by the difference of trails in the stars?

Yes, good eye, I was facing more or less in that direction too.

Thanks for the kind comments, everyone!

Beautiful image! The long exposure with moonlight illuminated the rocks and trees in the distance perfectly. I am amazed at the details of the rocks. Well done!

Excellent photo ! I see that the tree was backlit by an illuminant , The shadows of the main tree vs the shadows of the other vegitation seem to be perpendicular to each other, which did get me by surprise. The sky is wonderful and the colours are very pleasing. Composition is spot on ! - TFS.

Thanks. And thank you for all the responses. I think my previous responses did not come through, so I'll do a general thank you to the very kind words everyone has. I really appreciate it.

I did backlight/sidelight the tree with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during the exposure. The moon was low in the sky, and to accentuate that, I also lit from an angle that produced long shadows. Shadows create detail and depth, and I love 'em.
