This is a terrific capture! Every bit as good as a hummingbird photo and much less common as far as I am concerned. It stands out so well against the dark background.

Wow, love the shadows in the wing folds. Very cool! Did you prefocus for this shot?

I tried, but here the problem with butterflies - you never know where they go at any moment.

They are the worst subjects to catch in flight. I usually can get one or two in focus out of two dozens, or more. The easiest way is to try to catch a moment when they either fly around flowers, or take off from.

Thanks. It was really good light on lantana, and good shade behind it.

Yep, timing and luck. )) Actually I like to shot butterflies, it's very good training for focusing, not only for the camera, but for my reactions.

That is a catch to wonder at and ponder on!
Umm, did you ask it to "Stop! Hold that position!" before you shot?.......heh!......

I usually call them not very polite names because they never listen.

Very cool, it makes sense to anticipate their actions in that way. Were you shooting in a continuous shooting mode, or single? Such a great shot!

Terrific shot. However you got it, it turned out beautifully. Brightened my day just seeing it. Not many butterflies around here and few blooms. Going to Garvan Gardens today, so maybe I'll get lucky. Happy holidays.

Really am impressed with that butterfly and lantana shot!
Very rare to get to see such a "perfect" combination of all the elements!
Angky.

perefect timing, good composition, there is something majestically about the butterfly.

I believe it was continuous mode, and SEL focusing that time. In general it does not make the difference for me personally, because butterflies are the most terrible subject to catch, and the ratio is always the same: many missed frames, and only one or two lucky ones. In continuous mode it's better if the background is not close because with very close and messy background lens will start re-focusing like crazy )).
