A series of winter pics with K-m
Posted By: tcom, 12-09-2008, 01:16 PM

I picked up a K-m in a shop two weeks ago. First it was just for testing during a few days, but I finally decided on keeping the K-m.

The K-m is a nice little camera. I went into the shop to handle the Pana G1 as I was looking for a small DSLR, but this K-m is just about the same size than the G1, so I am way better of with the K-m, given all lenses I have for it.

I am surprised at the good built quality for an entry level camera.

On the negative points of the camera, the limited buffer, while the shutter allows 3 fps, the buffer has just enough space for 6 images.

As for the image quality, here a series of photos shot on sunday. All these shots have been made in RAW and converted with Silkypix:

1
K-m, 1/200, f/8, FA31

2
Km, 1/1250, f/9, FA31

3
Km, 1/400, f/8, FA31

4
Km, 1/200, f/4.5, 63mm, DA*50-135

5
Km, 1/400, f/5.6, 115mm, DA*50-135

6
Km, 1/250, f/5.6, FA31

7
Km, 1/400, f/7.1, FA31

8
Km, 1/250, f/5.6, FA31

These and more shots are available in full resolution under Pentax Km - a set on Flickr

You have incredible light. Love the first shot and the one with a wispy cloud voer the shack. Wonderful images. I have never seen the KM except in an ad. I handled the Pan G1, an incredible camera. I don't see much difference between the K10D and the KM.

The difference is size and features. MUCH smaller and lighter, no top LCD, controls similar to K200D, takes regular batteries, kit lens has plastic mount. Think of it as a midget K200D.

Those are some nice photos! They make me want to jump on a plane and head for Europe! (No real snow yet in the mountains east of my home.) It looks like you made a wise purchase.

great shots. seems that K-m will be sort of little gem. Would make nice coupling with DA40 IMHO. Anyway I only have 2Qs:
1 - did you do lot of levels/curves or are the exposures more or less straight from the camera?
2 - How loud is the shutter compared to say K100D or K10D?

Wth large areas of snow under sunshine, there is enough light to fool the metering of probably all cameras.

The levels/curves are more or less straight out of the camera, but I had to work with EV compensation while taking these photos.

As for shutter sound, it is higher pitched than the K10D/K20D.

Some beautiful shots. You handled the snow scenes well. Maybe because you've got softer light, instead of hard midday light, where one sometimes take the pictures.

How much EV change did you dial in ?
