The dog was going crazy last night, after looking out I saw some reflections up in the tree tops. So there I was at 3AM, waist deep in the snow wearing nothing but a dressing gown, snapping away.

Good shot. If I did that, I'd never get back to sleep. Above and beyond the call of duty. Of course the dog knew you would want to get the shot.

OK. Now I'm curious, what is it?
You must be impervious to cold.

Here we have dogs barking, traffic noise , trains, fireworks ( I hope) , feral cats and rarely raccoons . It is truly nice to know martins roam the night . Very nice image Bertwert !

Thanks! The dog will bark at something for hours to alert us if we don't get up and see what it is... it's her job but we don't always appreciate it

It's a pine marten, scientific name poultree killeri

It's warmed up a bit here, around 0° and even some rain the other day - that's why the guy looks soaking.

Thanks! I'd agree on a pine marten, another (out of focus) shot shows it's lighter bib a bit better.

Thanks! I think this is the first time I've used that flash I got off you for wildlife shots, seems to be working with plenty of power here

There's many many things roaming the night out there, a lot of which are very rarely seen...

Thank you - I'm not so sure I agree, feeling pretty dead now

Waist deep in snow, did you have a tripod, or flash to throw so much light on this subject?

No tripod, it's handheld and illuminated by flash (540 on full power). There was a little bit of moonlight - enough to see to walk, but not to see the marten in the tree. To focus, I had a flashflight and pointed it to get reflections in the eyes for aiming the camera, I must say I am very impressed with the AF sensor - it was too dark to make it out to focus manually, but it locked right on after a few seconds.

Terrific shot, Robert. So that's what a pine martin looks like; I have to admit that up to now, I had the vague notion that a pine martin was a bird.

Great shot. Around here our martens go after the squirrels. But being a weasel, I suppose they will eat anything they can sink their teeth into.
