Great detailed shot. That's the type of shot that I was hoping to get. For someone who doesn't see them often, you found one that allowed you to take a very good shot. Nice work and thanks for sharing.

Believe it or not, I was planing wood (in the -10ºC) and my shop is unheated, doesn't even have doors, and I looked up and saw him in a tree across the parking lot. Completely fortuitous.

You captured a very excellent image of a bird I've never seen!
Great detail showing on that bird.
Looks like a lot of woodpecker holes in that tree--must have some kind of insect or larva just under the bark.
Angky.

Angky.
The lowest hole he started in 2017, look how big it was then.
He comes back from time to time, but probably not more than a few times a year.

Now there are two holes at least 3x8 inches and many smaller hole. The tree however still appears to be alive.

Good documentary over the years!
And you have a very dedicated bird there!
Maybe his work has been keeping the tree clean of infestations...
For sure the tree has been growing, so he must be a good presence.
Thanks for the update!
Angky.

Superb. We have a few woodpeckers around here, but the only time I was near one with my camera the light was fading and I think I had the 21mm on the camera. Shot looks good here and great on flikr. Maybe the secret to woodpeckers is to make the scraping sound of planing wood?

I was using a power thickness planer so probably not. He was back out there yesterday almost all day. It's obviously a good food source at the moment.

Good to know. I guess I won't be taking my hand tools out to the woods

And people complain about the weight of lenses.
