Brittany by car - an essay.
Lens: Pentax-DA L 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL WR Camera: K-5 Mk I Photo Location: Bretagne
Posted By: IsaacReaves, 02-06-2022, 10:01 AM

We often travel from the north coast from La Manche to the southern coast, sur le golfe de Gascogne here in Bretagne. The shutterbug in me has been cooped up for a quite a long while so I couldn't resist documenting our journey through gently rolling terrain southward through the heart of Bretagne's agricultural zones. All shots snapped between 80 and 120 km/h in bleary conditions.

As a newcomer to Pentax, the TAv feature on my new-to-me K5 is a revelation. Most shots are 1/1000 and f5.6-f8 on auto ISO. The weather was quite rainy for our 2 hour journey between the coasts, providing some nice moody skies and thick atmospheres. I hope you enjoy looking at these as much as I did making them. I must say also that I'm quickly developing a lot of respect for this little kit lens.

Pt 1.

Some fantastically great catches you made!
And I've never seen that land before, and yet it now appears not a great deal different from land I know.
Good recording of the trip.

I agree - I especially like the third one in pt. 1.

Gosh, that 18-55 "kit lens" performs quite a bit better than I would have expected. I gave one away having never used it, and another still wrapped in the plastic it came in when I bought one of my K-s2's. Just for giggles, I may take it for a ride later. Thanks for that photo series!

Quite skillful shots from a moving vehicle. Enjoyed viewing all. I've done this myself, but your rate of success is far better than mine. Thanks for posting.

Excellent shots, and a great idea for me to consider giving a try. Your countryside is beautiful, and I think the rain and clouds added a lot to the images.

Thanks all for the kudos and kind words - makes me happy that folks are enjoying them. I love to shoot in series like this rather than dwell on a perfect single image. A lot of photographers talk about a single image telling a story. Maybe I'm not an abstract enough thinker, but pictures of constipated looking people with wrinkles don't tell me much of a story at all ... I kid! I kid! ... mostly ;^)

I could be unintentionally sandbagging here. After doing a bit of research, it seems like there are in fact 3 versions of this lens:

1) the original non-WR 18-55 that came as a kit lens
2) a separately issued 18-55 WR that was sold separately as a slight upgrade (mine)
3) later on, a green-ring 18-55, also apparently WR.

Mine has no colored rings on it at all and is all black, with just a white 18-55 printed on the barrel. It's got quite a bit of barrel distortion on the wide end at 18mm and vignettes until stopped down to about f6'ish. At 20mm a lot of that distortion is gone. Neither are a big deal as both the camera and lens are well profiled in my editing software and that cleans up with a press of the button.

On the long end, where most of the above photos were shot, I don't have any major complaints with sharpness. AF speed is really good, or at least good enough for me. I haven't worked AF-C too much yet but expect that it'll be plenty good enough for me.

I think I'm going to be on the hunt now for one of those red-ringed 55-300s!

Thanks - I liked that one alot, too. That was a single capture. AF locked right on to the church through those trees at highway speeds. Great stuff from this K-5. It looks pretty ominous from the highway, just kind of sits up there on that hill high above the freeway behind the thicket. Some day I need to make a point of visiting on-site.
