Vultures, not adorable, but interesting subjects!
Lens: 55-300 PLM Camera: KP Photo Location: Loxahatchee, FL ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/1000s Aperture: F8

The Turkey Vulture is definitely not a pretty bird, but it is very good at what it does - apparently that nose can pick up the scent of rotting flesh at a 300 meter altitude. The Black vulture is a cousin, although their eyes are just as capable of sighting a carcass at that altitude, they don't have the nose for it. Instead, they watch their cousins circle around, zeroing in on the prize, then swoop in for a free meal, being a little bigger and more aggressive, they push the Turkey Vultures aside.

Very excellent and definitive shots of those heads!
I know about the turkey vultures--they abound around here--but didn't know about their keen sense of smell.
Angky.

Very nice shots with great lighting on the Turkey Vulture. I find them to be very interesting birds, although where I am in Texas, they like to perch on our fireplace chimneys and make a mess of the roofs.

Thanks Guys - the closer I look at them the more of a fan I've become, probably because we don't have a chimney!

The most plentiful soaring bird in our sky. Vultures are always on road kill detail. I like the way they ride the air currents. Good head shots. Thanks for sharing.

I really like the first shot! In Australia we also have a bare-headed bird called the Friar-bird (several species). However, it's relatively small and isn't a raptor. It's actually a honeyeater!
