Ice fishing on the Sainte Anne River in winter
Camera: Canon G3X Photo Location: Quebec, CANADA Aperture: F5.6
Posted By: RICHARD L., 02-17-2022, 01:07 PM

Each year, local purveyors set up fishing cabins on the frozen Sainte Anne River so that tourists (and local people also) can catch tomcods by the thousands. They let the fish freeze outside on the snow in minus 25 degree weather before packing them for the refrigerator. Of course, ice fishing may be just an excuse for people to drink and have fun in groups ... LOL! Fish eaters say this is one of the tastiest fish of all when cut into fillets and roasted with garlic butter. Canon G3X with an 8.8 to 220 mm superzoom.

Wow. Is that a normal catch. With that many, they better be good. Thanks for showing the local action.

Looks like harvesting from a migratory run.
But with ice on the river, I wonder about that.

Yes, they catch them by the hundreds. They almost jump onto your lap.

People hang several lines with hooks and simply get them out of the water. Sometimes fish bite so much you're extremely busy and you can't get them up fast enough.

The purveyors set up an insulated and heated shack (a cabin if you will) and dig a linear trench in the ice where people hang lines with hooks. This form of ice fishing is practised here in Quebec in several locations (Sainte Anne River and Saguenay River among others) as well as in Minnesota (Land of 10 000 lakes).

Best Regards to all.
