Old Convent in Deschambault, QUEBEC.
Lens: DA 18-135 mm ED Camera: Pentax K3 III Photo Location: Quebec, CANADA ISO: 100 Aperture: F11

Generations of Catholic nuns spent their lives in this Convent. Each gable was a window from where the sisters could comtemplate life and the Municipal Cemetery. Most of them have died since and the building has been renovated and serves now as a Public Library. Pentax K3 III + DA 18-135 mm ED at 47,5 mm and f/11.

That information about the religious history of how people have sought to improve--that always fascinates me.
This is "just" a building, but people had great aspirations for its benefit in their lives.
Now it is a library--which might be a fitting role for it as life improvement...
Thought provoking!
Angky.

THX !

This Convent was next to a small farm ran by the Sisters for 100 years. They milked a few cows and made cheese, had chickens to produce eggs, an apple orchard and they tended a huge garden to feed the Community. Only the orchard is still visible on the South side of the building, everything else has been abandoned or dismantled. The Convent occupies a prime real-estate site facing South, up a cliff near the Saint Lawrence, enjoying a micro-climate that gave them a tremendous advantage in food production. The site is beautiful and the building that served to house the Nuns has now been converted to a new useful purpose.

Regards

Touching story. I just now noticed the cemetery in the foreground.

These people led lives different than the one I aspire to live. By your account there was productivity to their lives.

Does the Catholic Church still own the building and lease it as a library? Who maintains and harvests the orchard?

Hello,

The Convent is now a property of the Municipality. The Orchard is pretty much abandoned with weeds growing all over and I saw birds feeding off of Apple trees in the Spring.

Regards
