First try of my HD DA 55-300 mm f/4-5.8 ED WR on my new K3 III 26 Mpx camera
Lens: HD DA 55-300 mm ED Camera: Pentax K3 III Photo Location: Quebec, CANADA ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/320s Aperture: F11

Pentax K3 III + HD DA 55-300 mm ED mounted on tripod, 1/320 sec @ f/11 and 230 mm FL. Result looks nice as a first try. Every lens I mount on this new body seems to become even sharper than it was before.

A very colorful spot with very colorful light. I have to ask why you used a tripod? At 1/90 you would still get great focus in at least 3 shots. I actually wonder if you took off shake reduction. It is a cool composition using the negative space and colors. You suggest "even sharper than before" I think the tree in the middle should be showing every peel of bark. You either meant this or didn't know this can be sharper even at iso 2000.

This HD DA 55-300 mm lens was always very sharp on my K3. Since having my new K3 III, all the APSc lenses I tried on it (DA* 60-250 mm f/4, DA 18-135 mm ED, HD DA 16-85 mm ED and this HD DA 55-300 mm) seem even sharper than before. The new 26 Mpx sensor works wonders. I use my Manfrotto 028 all the time (with my 645Z, my K1 and the APSc bodies) to use the lowest ISO rating possible and to be sure to obtain the maximum sharpness from my cameras. I disable the SR when I use the tripod. I took the same picture with my DA* 60-250 mm last week but during a snowstorm and with equal success.

I shot this scene with my 645Z + P67 500 mm f/5.6 too :

These two seem sharper. With the snow it is hard to tell but with the 645z I can see the individual pieces of bark on the middle tree. I can just make out a pattern in the bark with the 55-300. Maybe at f/11 26mp is fine enough for diffraction to start?

My 18-250 is excellent on my k100d but so-so on my ks-2. Of course that is 6mp to 20mp.

I tend to agree with your comments, but both images are pretty nice.

A 645Z is not in the same league as an APSc camera, you know. It is a "beast" with 50 Mpx using some of the best optics available today (P645 and P67 medium-format lenses).

I took the same "Municipal Park" picture at f/8, f/11, f/16 and f/22 with the K3 III + HD DA 55-300 mm ED zoom (@ 300 mm FL) on tripod and reworked the images a little in Post-Processing. I think only the f/22 picture becomes "somewhat" diffraction limited. Anyway, on the camera MENU, I had dialed "Diffraction Correction" when using JPEG mode and this set-up seems to work. The Optimum Aperture seems to be f/16 for showing the sharpest details in the scene, f/8 being the worst (maybe due to lack of Depth of Field for the pine tree in the center).

I agree with your results. I wouldn't have thought that f/16 would hold up so well. When I use my Sigma 70 for macro and need tons of dof I was surprised how well it holds up at f/19 it is still worth the tradeoff but at f/22 it will wreck the photo on my 20 mp sensor.

I am glad you took the time and shared the results.

My motto is "Try to learn something new every day". Doing this practical "test" lifted unknown peculiarities of using the HD DA 55-300 mm zoom on the new K3 III. "Knowledge is Power", they say.
