Update on my Pentax 300mm DA lens.
Lens: Pentax 300mm DA lens Camera: k5IIs Photo Location: Saugus Ma.

To go with my new Pentax 300mm DA lens I invested in a manfforrto monopod to steady this old man's shake. These shots were with the monopod and it allows me more latitude with my settings--lower ISO along with a higher f/stop. I lke it so far.Should I get a head for it that allows me to tilt the camera more vertical . It's a Benro head for only $65----charliezap

Looks like it's working well for you. These are all very good shots. Does it make your arms less tired after shooting? Thanks for the update.

On each of my tripods, and my monopod, I use one of these :

Manfrotto 804RC2 3 Way Pan & Tilt Photo Tripod Head

Locks easily in each orientation, and is smooth enough to be able to use when balancing a long lens.

For a monopod, I definitely recommend a tilt only head (sometimes called a 2 way head). RRS and Promediagear make some of the best ones, but others make them for less, including knockoffs of the RRS one. I think Sirui has a somewhat affordable (<$100) one that's still rated for 30 lbs or so, if you want a name brand. I would probably stay away from the ones only rated for 5 or 6 lbs, although if DA300 is your biggest lens they might be okay.

Just got back from my nature walk today. No luck but there will be other day.--charliezap
