Hummingbirds are Back
Lens: HD DA55-300mm PLM w/HD 1.4x Teleconverter Camera: K-3II Photo Location: Boerne, TX ISO: 800 Shutter Speed: 1/350s Aperture: F9.5
Posted By: ToddK, 03-27-2022, 06:20 AM

I put out my feeder on Friday afternoon and they started arriving within an hour. These shots were taken as the sun was setting with the light just hitting the feeder area against a completely shadowed background. The shutter speed was 1/400 sec, which is the slowest that I have ever photographed hummingbirds in flight.

Super shots, Todd. Our hummingbird invasion ended some time ago - just shows you hill country and the coast are very different environments.

What great shots of something we don't get here.

Can you DHL some over to me?

Great time of day to get the shots. I may need to reposition a feeder to get shots like these. At 1/400, you don't get a complete freeze of the action, but did get nice results. We haven't seen hummingbirds here yet.

Thanks Jer! Yours are probably halfway to Canada about now. They are like all of the snow birds, they like that fair weather you get on the coast.

Sure. I think they would like your garden, but you might need to bring them inside for the winter.

They just showed up around here. We went for a walk in town yesterday and saw a lot of them. I am sure they will be in your area soon. I like the way the wings came out at the slower shutter speed. I will have to try it some more.

Well in that case, I am sure you won't mind them buzzing around in the house!

As long as they don't leave personal calling cards everywhere... which may well upset Lady Kerrowdown.

I really like the appearance of the wings. Not completely stopped, but yet very detailed and seemingly translucent.
Angky.

Wonderful wildlife series. We have been enjoying these creatures all winter long. We get no respite in keeping the feeders full. A 24/7 undertaking. Great photography. )
