When light kisses the land
Posted By: JMR, 12-16-2008, 08:55 AM

These are the kinds of landscapes I like to take, rolling hills with low light so as to capture the nuances created by the low sun- whether sunrise or sunset. Such times are always worth waiting for. Taken in Caledon, Ontario.

Nice shot. I love that kind of light too. IMHO, and just a matter of personal taste, but I think this shot would pop a bit more if you could boost the local constrast a bit with a large radius unsharp mask. You'd have to be careful not to blow the highlights though.

To be honest, I don't fiddle with controls too much. Mostly contrast, sharpness and Gausian blur for the more creative images. I will give it try as I have never used unsharp mask (what would a large radius be?). Thanks for the feedback.

Try in the 30 to 80 pixel radius range and see what you like. You will need to use a very small amount of sharpening to go with the large radius. I don't know what amount to tell you, since that value varies in different software. Try about 1/5th of the amount recommended for normal sharpening (the default?). If you find it blows the highlights too much, you might need to tone down the highlights first. Hope that works for you.

Here's an article on Luminous Landscape that might help:

I can see that you are placing great emphasis on patterns and repetition on the images you took. Great shot

Thanks Jeff. I do like the image as is, but I will try increasing the contrast because I want to learn how to do it when an suitable image arises.

I gess that is somewhat true, but I like to think I am drawn to the quality of light first.
