Lunar Eclipse - May 2022
Lens: FA* 300 F4.5 Camera: Sony A7R III Photo Location: Front Yard ISO: 3200 Shutter Speed: 1s Aperture: F8

F8 and Be there...

Not exactly shooting Looney 8 or 11 here... F8 / ISO 3200 / 1 Sec exposure.
FA* 300 f4.5 on an LA-KE1 adapter mounted to Sony A7R III. Single Image. Cropped and Deep Prime Noise Reduction applied along with small adjustments to lighting and contrast.

Here's the same basic shot with the E mount Tamron 70-300 f4.5-6.3 RXD (ISO 6400, F8).

To me the Tamron is not as sharp but it is quite good compared to what I would have expected. The Tamron shot is at ISO 6400 so that difference exists also.

Pretty good shots. I like the deeper colors in the first shot. Both are much longer exposure than I use. My exposures last year were 1/60 sec. Cloudy skies prevailed here last night. Thanks for posting these for those you us who missed out.

Thank you. I was also surprised by the shutter speeds the camera selected but I chimped to see what worked and this seemed good (-3 exposure compensation) The darkness is a matter of taste - I can see your point and these were quickly processed on my laptop and might have some future changes.

The first shot is more precise in detail.
But for a moon shot on an interestingly presented moon--as it was presented to us--I think the bottom shot gives the feeling better.

You lost me, but I’m interested in your feedback. These are almost the same shot; framing and other factors are quite similar. I do have other shots on the feed - those are framed differently, is that what you mean? As for the minor exposure differences that’s something I can tinker with, these were quick hack jobs as far as processing goes.

I guess I didn't say it very well, did I.
What I meant to say was that this moon was presented to us, from the heavens, as a fascinatingly artfully delivered orb of the heavens. (I don't handle poetic talk very well, I'm afraid!)
But anyway, your bottom shot, with the Tamron lens, actually did that moon shot in a much more pleasing way, considering the subject matter.
I really liked the softer glow of the second shot--making the moon appear more like a gift.

So, I'm not speaking from a technical photographer's perspective on this shot; I'm responding to the feeling I got from looking at the image as a great piece of art.
That lens and your use of it with that exposure, did its work--at least for me!
Angky.

Ahhhh! Ok. That’s not confusing at all. I think that I could render the Pentax shots to look more like that but my preference was different. The lack of sharper details does make it glow as you said. Interesting feedback, thank you.
