A Mountain Decomposes
Lens: D FA 28-105mm Camera: K-1 ii Photo Location: High Sierra Nevada Mtns ISO: 400 Aperture: F13.5

Standing on the very rim of a mountain ridge, the mountain drops away beneath my feet.
Not in motion at any given time that we stand there, but gradually descending as the granite decomposes--a little bit each year.
Yet the plants won't give it up, as they repopulate a bit of the more stable areas, each with their own brand of color.
Momentarily stable for a short time, then sliding down to the river's headwaters far below as the rains and snow melt trickle their footholds down the steep slopes.

First image--High clouds moving in above to bring another day of summer rain, and dropping spotty mists down with dim shafts of light filtering through.
Second image--Buttresses of granite decomposing more slowly than softer areas that have already slid downslope.
Third image--Plants with their various flowers decorating the slopes. Next year might see them in that same spot, but things are always moving downslope here.
Angky.

Very good images which illustrate the main points of your discussion. Decomposition and erosion are inevitable in this environment. On those steep slopes anything not securely affixed will move downward given the slightest encouragement by rain, wind and snow.

Thanks, Mike.
It is such crazy ground that, standing there, a person is almost drawn into it--as if to slide to the bottom along with the soil.
Angky.

I can see that happening. It seems that there is no solid base. By the way, the images are nice without further analysis.
