When sitting on our deck, I saw this bird high in a tree, where the branches were sufficiently thin to see.
When I took the photo, I thought it was a black bird, but then I saw the spots and the beak .......

From my distance, I thought this was the same bird, but now that I have a better view, the the spots and the beak look different.
Here I get a good view of the area around the eye, and I think this is a young American Robin???

The first photo looks to be a juvenile/nonbreeding European Starling. I agree that the second bird is an immature American Robin. If you are interested in learning more about birds the easy way, I highly recommend the Merlin Bird ID app from the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. It can help you identify birds based on appearance and behavior, or even just by listening to their calls! It is available for Apple and Android devices, and best of all, it's free!

You have two interesting shots!
Good captures--at least they would be for me.
Thanks for posting them.

Good captures of the birds. I agree with those IDs. I may download that Merlin Bird ID app. I always have trouble identifying birds.

I too think starling and robin.

I use Merlin. It is good but can give false positives on occasion or not recognize a bird. It is hard to hold a camera with your phone in one hand.

Than all of you for your responses.
I just stared at the treetops and then let my KP do its thing.
