Ruby Throated Hummingbirds
Lens: Sigma 135-400 APO Camera: Pentax KP Photo Location: Yard ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/350s Aperture: F5.6

A pair of young Ruby Throated Hummingbirds were competing for dominance of the front yard feeder earlier today. I only got one decent shot with them together, but many solo shots. Here are some examples. Shutter speeds were actually 1/400 and 1/500.

I like those iridescent colors. I've got some decent shots of hummingbirds, but rarely catch them with the right light to show the colors. Nice work.

Cool! Their body shape and that outsize bill make them look like a creature from a cartoon! Well done!

Thank you! I seldom get colors this good when I photograph these birds. I was fortunate today to have fairly good light in the front yard.

Thank you. I know what you mean about getting the colors. Fortunate for me, two young male hummingbirds were battling over this feeder and gave me the opportunity to get some shots without them noticing me.

Thank you much. These birds are rather unique. The bill is outsized, but their tongue is much longer than the bill. They need both to lap up the nectar from flowers.

Nice job, Mike. These little guys are hard to catch (for me, at least), and you've got the mojo I generally lack when I photograph 'em.

Thanks, Jer. Not sure it's mojo or patience. The birds helped a lot because neither one wanted the other to access the feeder. One was guarding and the other was attacking.

hi Mike,
you are absolutely a specialist of one-subject serial nature photos, the sequence is fantastic and quite difficult to shot because hummingbirds are moving pretty fast!
BRAVO.
have a good day.

Thank you, Loris. I am happy that you enjoy viewing my posts which have multiple shots of the same subject. I often post multiple shots because each one may show a different aspect or view of the subject and if the shots are good why not post them. I really appreciate your positive comments. Mike.

Thank you, Shelly. I don't get good shots often. Many times they are in the shadows or dim light and I struggle to get good detail. I appreciate your comments.

Thanks, Todd. I am glad that you liked the shots. I tried to take advantage of one of the few opportunities that I had to photograph them with good colors.
