Nesting Frogmouth
by RobGeraghty, on Flickr

This bird successfully raised a chick on this nest last year. I hope she's successful this time as well!
Frogmouths are a species of Nightjar. They feed at night, mostly on moths and insects. The big difference between Owls and Frogmouths is that Owls hunt with their feet, while Frogmouths hunt with their beaks.

A White-faced Heron was nesting nearby as well.

Good interesting shots and information. The Frog mouth nest looks a little space for the bird size.

Thanks Mike! The bird seems to have made just a cursory attempt at a nest. It's the only Tawny Frogmouth nest I've ever seen (this bird used the same nest last year), so I don't know whether it's typical of the species. Certainly Magpies and Currawongs make bigger nests and are a similar size. Maybe Frogmouths typically only lay one egg?

Thank you! This is the main species which we have in Canberra. The other one which is seen now and then is the White-necked Heron. We have quite a few Heron species in Australia.
