Bumblebees and Unknown Chafer
Lens: Tamron f/2.8 90mm Camera: Pentax K-3 Photo Location: Manchester, Iowa
Posted By: mroeder75, 09-18-2022, 08:49 PM

Numerous bumblebees and this unknown chafer were in my back yard, today. My spouse planted this plant/flower bush that attracts bumblebees, honeybees, and this unknown chafer. I like the colors, which is my reason for sharing with you.

I appreciate your comment but started to view and could not find a green cucumber beetle. But maybe.

Nice detailed capture of the insects and blooms with bright colors. Can't help on the beetle.

I think you are right, after looking at the U. of Minnesota Extension Service website. Our neighbor has gifted us cucumbers from his garden, and a cucumber beetle.

Great shot of a Common Eastern Bumble Bee, Bombus impatiens. As they get older, they start to lose hair and they often get a bald spot on the thorax between the wings. This is the most common bumble bee across the eastern half of the USA.

An entomologist! Thanks for the explanation. As a kid, we had much larger bumblebees that came out of holes in the backyard in my hometown in Iowa 45-miles east of here. Any thoughts on what that variety may have been?

I'm not an entomologist, just an interested naturalist. There are many bees that nest in the ground, including bumble bees.

What a beautiful nature image. That Tamron lens married to the k-3 is quite an impressive marriage. Many thanks for the awesome treat.

I agree with you on my current bumblebee, but not my boyhood bumblebee.
So, any one else on larger bumblebees?
