Thanks! I think the computer game "crash bandicoot" character made the name known outside Oz? There's several species, but I've only seen two - the Southern and Northern Brown Bandicoots.

They have been known to dig up garden beds sometimes, but I haven't heard of them described as pests. Sadly, this species is extinct in most of it's former range because of more bothersome pests - foxes and cats.

Thanks! You're exactly right. They prefer being amongst the grass and bushes than out in the open. Being on an asphalt path is much worse!
I stayed still and he hopped across to the grass on my right which he was headed towards, to look for grubs.
