Never seen one of these before

My wife and I were taking turns again this year house-sitting for one of her co-workers. I noticed this squirrel near her house in a paint scheme I've never seen before. It was about 30% bigger than the 'common' gray squirrels around here. Does anyone know the name of the species?

I think it's a Fox Squirrel. Gorgeous tail!

Fox Squirrel - Sciurus niger - NatureWorks

Its size is consistent with your +30% estimate.

Their range extends into the most southern parts of Canada, so I've never seen one here in Eastern Ontario. We have red squirrels, black, and grey.

Thanks Craig, much appreciated. I sent the image to the NatureWorks people in case they want to use it on that webpage.

I agree with c.a.m. on this ID. We had Fox squirrels here when we moved here. Large pretty squirrels. Some were almost totally black. As Grey squirrels move into our area, they displaced the Fox squirrels. Seems that this often happens. We still see some Fox squirrels, just not in this immediate area. Nice shot.

Thanks MikeNArk. This property also has a chestnut tree which you don't see every day either.

Fox Squirrels have different colorations from region to region, here in Western Maryland they tend to be gray on the back and reddish along the underside with a red bushy tail.
