Weird Fungus

That is some strange looking stuff. Maybe someone knowledgeable of such things can enlighten us. Nice capture. What is this growing on?

I once had a friend who collected fungi that looked a lot like this. He really liked them.
But I don't know if it is the same kind.
I like your shot of it, but I don't think I'll try to see if it tastes good!
