Home Sweet Radiant Home
~~~~~
I love these old stoves. Such beautiful elegance. I see these and I immediately want to photograph them. At night, of course. That's what I do. This is an old, beautiful radiant home stove for keeping warm on cold desert nights, resting at peace in an old barn in a ghost town in the Mojave Desert. While in mostly darkness, I illuminated the stove with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the long exposure.
Photos, books and more
We are having a night photography workshop at Nelson. But even if you are not signing up, you might be interested in this video because we discuss several photos, some of which I've posted here. They're all photos that we took at Nelson Ghost Town.
That is a fine example of an old wood stove. I've never seen one quite like it. Very nicely illuminated in the old barn. Is this site overseen and managed by some entity? It looks in pretty good condition. Excellent image.
It certainly has a lot of Industrial Revolution character.
Hey Mike! I unfortunately do not know much about this stove, but it is to the best of my knowledge a wood stove. It's beautiful, it's ornate, and I absolutely love it. I've only seen one other one that sort of looks like it, and that was in a quasi-ghost town in Arizona.
Nelson is indeed managed by a family, who lives in the premises. You can find out more about them in the video if you want to watch that. They're super nice!!
Thank you very much!
Hi Ken. I just watched the video. I have to admit that the owner of that place must be a very interesting person. He has created a very eclectic collection of buildings and items which are ideal for photography, especially at night. The workshop sounds great, and the images presented in the episode were outstanding. Hope all goes well.
Thanks for watching. Yes, the whole family is very interesting and super nice. Very strange and fantastic collection that their daughter jokes is their way of spending her inheritance.
I am excited about the workshop. I think it's going to be a super great experience. But like I say, even if you don't attend, the video is an interesting glimpse into what's there, especially at night!!
Yes, I do believe it is a wood stove.
Several years ago, on a training program on the remote reaches of a large ranch in Texas, our family stayed in a tiny cabin (2 adults, 2 small children) for a couple of winter months.
We had a stove like this one pictured and it made that cabin fiercely hot even in the winter.
We had to be very careful how many small chunks of mesquite we put into it!!!
Very great picture!
Angky.
Thanks. And yes, they do get hot. I've stayed in a few cabins with stoves like this (only not as cool looking). They would get intensely hot. But then, at least for me, I would wake up in the morning and it would be really cold.
