Gulls and Cormorants at the Toad Suck Dam on Christmas Eve
Lens: Sigma 170-500 DG Camera: Pentax K-5IIs Photo Location: Toad Suck Dam, Arkansas River ISO: 640 Shutter Speed: 1/1250s Aperture: F8

On a cold afternoon on Christmas Eve, we drove down to the the Toad Suck Lock and Dam on the Arkansas River just to get out of the house for a bit. When we arrived, we were surprised to see a multitude of Gulls and Cormorants were above and below the dam feeding or resting in the cold weather.

Thanks, Angky. There were more birds there than I would ever have expected on a cold winter afternoon. I just had to document it.

Thanks , rhsnz. I have found myself picking up the K-5Ils more often this year. I have a KP and use it often, but like using this one also. Best regards.

That's a lot of birds. I kind of like the last one with the variety.

Thanks, David. It was more birds than I have ever seen before when I visited there. My wife and I went back out yesterday to see if the birds were still there. There were less, but still plenty. Got some interesting shots that I'll post later. Thanks for commenting.[COLOR="Silver"]

Any idea why it’s called ‘Toad Suck’? I am familiar with Booger Hollow, lol.

Thanks for commenting. Here's the story often repeated.

According to the Toad Suck website, “Long ago, steamboats traveled the Arkansas River. When the water was too shallow, the captains and their crews tied up to wait where the Toad Suck Lock and Dam now span the river. They refreshed themselves at the local tavern. Neighbor folks said, “They sucked on the bottle ’til they swelled up like toads.’ Hence, the name Toad Suck.” -

Every spring, there is a Toad Suck Daze Festival in downtown, Conway, Arkansas. Wishing you a Happy New Year.
Mike
