My new acquaintance
Posted By: OrenMc, 12-27-2008, 09:52 AM

Been seeing this guy around a bit and on C-Day he came up to check me out.
I only had my Tamron 28-75 but he got as close as to around 15 feet. It was a present for me.

posed.

My oh my, 15 ft. I cant get one within 150ft or more. Of course if I had one 15ft away and pointed my BIG MA at him he would immediatly leave for parts unknown. I have suspected for some time that the size of lense dictated how far the wildlife stayed away from you. Very nice one.

juanraortiz thank you, He definately put a smile on my face also.

JCSullivan, thanks also. He was alright as long as he was making the advances. But as soon as I made as couple step his way he was gone. Not to worry though. He landed about 50 yards away
Boy I wish I would have had my Sigma 100-300 f/4 much better suited for this.

I wasn't watching my histogram either. Something I am trying to develop a habit doing.

jmc7104, you caught me while I was writing. Thank you.

Your reasoning about the size of lens sound plausible however, I was more like 8-10 feet away for this guy carrying my Sigma last summer.

and we walked around together for about a half hour before he just plain wore me out.

That last shot is fascinating. It is like seeing the animal in 1:1 ratio. Great shot! That goes for the other shots, too, btw. What kind of fish bag are you carrying to attract these birds?

Now that you posted the other shots...the last one (from last year) is obviously magnificent.

The second one well, I think you were teasing us by not posting it first.
As for the first, it would probably be a better image if cropped.

Again, well done.

I've posted the one from last year before, I was just posting it to because of the comment about the size of lens and distance. That guy didn't have any problem with my 100-300 f/4.
I think some of the birds in this area get quite a bit of attention so their used to it. At least nobody has really crossed that boundery that would make them very timid.
About that fellow on the dock, I am not sure but I think I have ran into him a few times there but I am not possitive if it is the same bird. I am looking forward to future interaction with him. I really want a good in flight photo and of course with perfect light would be nice.

Cupic, Thanks , Dr Dolittle huh
Duh Vinci, thank you for the comment and, yes, it is all very rewarding.
ESC, it was very thrilling interacting with him. I was constantly thinking " what is he going to do next? " Thank you

Thanks,
Oren

Wow, he really seem to be the king of the stage in the first photo! The close-up is just superb!
