Dismal dreary morning in north central PA...

K10D, Sigma 50-500mm (BIGMA) at 1/250sec, 190mm, f19, iso800
The use of the BIGMA required the higher than normal general shutter speed (for this type of scene) which in turn required the iso800 setting. Converted to greyscale and contrast boosted... At first I was upset with the noisiness/grainyness, but then I decided I liked the texture.

Nice mood! Did you crop this by any chance? The image makes me wonder what is below the bottom edge...

Very nice. We a lot of fog in the Toronto and Southern Ontario region.

No Crop Gawan... The bottom edge is all snow and the frame terminates just below my signature. Just hard to see on a white background. I may consider a simple frame.

Mike... Very interesting to see the trees on pointed to the left including th eones in the backgorund. Makes the image work better IMO... The B&W was the way to go or maybe its color and just a crappy day? We have had a few of those days lately too... always Great work... JIM

Jim, What little color there was in the scene was very subtle so I just pulled it out. Thanks for the comments.

Nice. I really like the mood.

BTW, I tried Neat Image against this and got a very nice result. Might want to try the free version to reduce noise. Some remains, but it looks much more like film grain.

woof!

My comment was made seeing the image on my work computer where the subtle cream white snow simply bended to the background (which was all white in that monitor), but I see the photo now at home more clearly..

Awesome shot Mike!! Great atmosphere!

I agree about your suggestion for a small frame to delineate the bottom of the image. It would simply "finish" a great shot.

Regards,
Marc

Nice Mike, until I read your description, I was about to ask what film that was... interesting grain. Did you really shoot at f/19?

Border added and processed thru Noise Ninja...

Thanks everyone for the encouraging comments!

Seaain, Thanks for the suggestion about the noise reduction. I had actually tried it on the full-rez version and the results were not satisfactory, but it worked ok on the downsized version.

Josh, I'm almost embarrassed to say "yes, I really did shoot this at f19". I shot several frames like this with the ISO up before realizing what the aperture was (I was a bit bleary that morning). I actually opened up the lens to f8 and decreased the ISO to 100, but by that time the mood and clouds had changed significantly. The lower ISO shots are much less interesting cloud-wise and without the "grain" they look very flat.

Great shot!! I really like the grain and the mood what it brings to the image.

The frame and 'Ninja-handling' was a nice improvement.
