Good shot. Butterflies rarely cooperate.

Thanks Mike! That's what it's called, honest!

I tried to catch it with its wings open, but it wouldn't cooperate - long enough for my reflexes at any rate. Other species never seem to stop for long, especially some of the beautiful black and white ones. I remember chasing various large black butterflies around Mount Greville in southern Queensland especially, with little success. The Common Browns seem to like sitting on the ground for some reason, which is a bonus for photos.

Good capture Rob. It has a nice blend of brown and gold colors with good markings. I find a lot of butterflies around here that like to land on the ground. They must need to stop and rest every once in a while.

That almost makes a great abstract with the ground texture backing up the butterfly textures.
Quite an interesting image!

Thanks Todd! You're probably right! Some other species seem to spend most of their time airborne, especially some of the largest ones we have here. I've spent a lot of time chasing Swallowtails and the like only for them to wander off without ever landing.

Thanks! If you look at the wing patterns in isolation you'd wonder why they are brown, but if you see them on orange clay, they can be quite good camouflage.
