I was photographing birds when this big fellow wandered onto the scene. We have a large number of axis deer around our area, almost as many as the native whitetails.

Terrific shot Todd. Great pose and couldn't ask for a better background. Cactus, juniper and rocky soil. A perfect example of the territory the deer, and you, live in. Had family that lived in New Mexico. Was very similar.

Jealous. All I tend to see are does. Really nice shot, I like the backdrop to it as well.

Beautiful shot of that deer in good lighting and scene. He gave you a great pose. Don't believe we have any of those around here.

Thank you Dave! The background does go nicely with the deer.

Thanks David! I have to admit that a lot of people around here feed corn to the deer, so they are very common. However, this is the first time I have seen a nice Axis Deer buck behind my house.

Thanks Mike! I don't know when they were introduced in Texas, but they spread all over the state. They are a species from India. Beautiful animals.

I never heard of axis deer so had to look it up. It is an invasive species in the United States.

Yes, I believe they were initially introduced in Texas. I am not sure how many states they are in. I know they were also introduced in Hawaii and have become a real problem with no predators.

Gorgeous animal, beautifully captured!

(I had never heard of Axis deer, either...probably sooner or later they'll mosey on down here...)
