of a red salvia bloom. This is a photo from last summer of a female ruby throated hummingbird. This plant is just starting to grow back from the ground due to the deep freeze of last winter.

What timing - striking picture, Todd!! I've photographed a number of these critters in our backyard over the years, but I've never produced a shot anywhere near as good as this one.

Really nice. Hummingbirds are so hard to catch not at a feeder.

How very true...recently we've seen one in the yard -- mainly at the bottlebrush flowers -- but so high up and so fast-moving, I don't have a prayer of photographing it. Tiny little guy, I think it's a ruby throat.

This is a terrific image!

That is a great shot. I occasionally get one that's feeding on flowers. When our Mimosa tree blooms out I'll have a better opportunity, but they may be 50 feet up. Thanks for showing us the way everyone wants to capture a hummingbird feeding!

Exactly what Jer said!
Makes me envious (in a good way) to see what you do with these shots!
Glad to see this one so perfectly displayed.

Thanks Jer! The key is to have a plant they like within a few feet of your rear porch. Then you can just sit there and wait for them to show up.

Thanks Julie! You definitely need flowers that they like closer to the ground to get a good shot.

Thanks Angky! As I replied to Jer, it is all about the placement of the plants they like. I was able to do this while sitting on my rear porch.

Wait a minute!
You say you placed this plant perfectly in Southern Texas and then enjoyed sitting on your back porch???
When I lived in Texas, I couldn't find any place or any time when I could do that!!!
But then, I've never been able to get any good shots of hummingbirds either.....

I can't take credit for the plant placement, it was already there. I will say that there are some limitations to when I can sit on my back porch.
