Foxtails After Rain
Lens: HD Pentax DA 20-40 LTD f:2.8 Camera: K-70 Photo Location: Northwestern California ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/250s Aperture: F8

Beautiful but dangerous!
I would like to clean and burn all of them, but they are on nearby public land.
I've spent many $$$ getting our dog repaired after he got into these (several times!).
He (and I) never seemed to learn!
In this image, these are lodged (knocked down to horizontal) by the wind and rain--which makes them available for rain gems.
The red colors are due to being, as yet, unripe. Another week or two and they will be ripe to do their most severe damage!

Pretty neat shot with all the water beads. Laying flat they make an interesting and colorful pattern. Nice observation.

Thanks, Mike!
It's one time that the obnoxious things can be appreciated!

Unfamiliar to me...why are they dangerous? Beautiful image, though!

These annual grasses are total devastation to animals after the seeds are ripe!
Very sharp points on the seeds and the seeds are hardened at the tip. So they spear into the animal's skin. Since they are also barbed, they do not come out easily, and can penetrate right into the internals of the animal. Our dog walked along a path that had some of the seeds lying on it and managed to get one between his toes. It penetrated and worked its way into his foot and just kept going until it eventually worked its way back out again on another area of his foot. But when he sniffed one up his nose (happened more than once) we had to pay a very expensive veterinarian bill to put him to sleep so that it could be extracted from his nose before it worked up into his head.

Could be eradicated I suppose, but all persons would have to be of the same mind and effort. That seems impossible, so we live with that weed and learn to avoid it.
Thanks for the question.
And thanks for the comment on the image.

I saw them as a sort of gem decorating the collection.
Thanks for your observation.

Aside from the danger, it is an abstract photo very well done.

Well, certainly it can be deadly for some animals.
For people it is merely a major nuisance!
Glad you thought it beautiful.

You do wisely to be glad that you don't have to put up with them!
But I think they actually like very short wet seasons and then dry summers.
So you probably won't have to ever put up with them--hopefull!
