Ferruginous hawk
Lens: Pentax DA 18-135mm Camera: K-50 Photo Location: Idaho ISO: 800 Shutter Speed: 1/1000s Aperture: F8

A friend of mine here in Idaho is a licensed falconer and he called me one day and asked if I wanted to see his latest project. It was a gorgeous Ferruginous Hawk. It has a wing spread of about 5 feet. He released it into the wild the following day.

Given my location east of the Mississippi by a fair amount, and north of the 45th parallel, I feel extremely fortunate to have seen one of these in hawks flight a few years back. Nice image of a good looking bird.

Thanks, Eaglem. The bird was keeping an eye on me, so keeping "eye contact" was no issue. This was one of my first outings with the "new to me" DA 18-135mm lens. I was very impressed with it's sharpness. And, the K-50 did a good job of reading the in-the-shade exposure.

Excellent close up of a beautiful hawk. They have such intense looking eyes.

Thanks for the kind words, Mike. My friend has a pet barn owl named Angus. He found him out in the desert, with an injured wing. The vet had to amputate the wing, and Dave kept Angus as a pet. Now, Angus has his own, very large aviary. I'll post some photos of him at a later time.
