LB Thrasher & Killdeer - VERY up close and personal...
Posted By: Marc Langille, 01-02-2009, 04:38 PM

Today's subjects: getting clean and getting messy. Taken with the Sigma 500/4.5 and that other camera... no cropping...

Long-billed Thrasher:

EXIF

Killdeer:

EXIF

Both taken while in a blind. The first was in the hunting compound at a man-made watering hole, the second at the shallow lake where you may have seen my Great Egret images in the past. Obviously they are both very close - possibly 15 feet or less away.

Cheers,
Marc

Another great capture Marc... You did tell me once it's the guy at the end of the shutter that makes to picture, not the camera... Next lens and size does matter for pictures like this. One day... JIM

Thank you Jim - actually the first part is in my signature. The gear (better equipment) just makes things easier and sometimes less frustrating...

I've got the understanding to make these sort of images, but I am still at the mercy of the subject's actions. I can only try to mitigate as best I can via a blind or techniques to approach the subjects.

The Sigma 500/4.5 is a 7 pound lens, so not for very long, unless BIF (birds in flight). Overhead is easiest. In a blind, a stabilizing platform is a must due to the long duration(s) you can spend in the blind.

Regards,
Marc

Marc, what can I say? Your images keep getting better and better. I especially like the killdeer, we have them up here and I never tire of watching them hunt the shoreline.

NaCl( keep expecting to see your work in NatGeo )H2O

The crazy part? Call it a good learning experience, but perhaps at the loss of getting top 3??

Here is the winning image in the competition:
Valley Land Fund Contest Winner

It kills me that I didn't pick this image - I almost did...

Thank you Peter... I got them even closer, but they were OOF due to being less than 12 feet away or the damn blind became the obstacle...

I appreciate the kind words!

Regards,
Marc
