Correct a tripod is involved, it also must have the capability to flip the camera into the vertical position and pan. Start on the right or left and take shots across the horizon overlapping 15%-20% on each shot. Try to use 50mm if possible as you will get less distortion. Shot rather quickly as things change in a short time. Take a reading then set camera in manual mode with chosen settings, turn off AWB and use either RAW or chose an appropriate fixed white balance such as daylight. Pull it into your favorite panorama editing software and have at it....then see all the mistakes you made.
