Rome for Improvement (abandoned movie set Roman columns with light painting)
Posted By: Ken Lee, 09-01-2023, 03:51 PM

Rome for Improvement
~~~~~
Roman columns greeting the night. There once were many reliefs, Roman columns, facades, griffins, statues, and more here, all reminiscent of ancient Rome. Almost all have been destroyed by the elements or vandals. While this is often listed as an abandoned movie studio, it seems to actually be the abandoned site of a sculptor. I illuminated the night scene with warm white light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. In this case, I chose to mimic the lights from the town and the still-rising full moon, goosing it along a little and keeping the light very natural. This long exposure image shows the natural movement of the stars over 12 minutes' time.
Strange things that you do find. I believe you posted a marvelous shot of of the water tank at this location, recently. Nice light again. Without the wooden truss across the top it would look even older than it is.
I did, so yes, same location, same evening. Thanks. Yes, without the wooden truss, you would have that illusion of marble.
Even without the vandalism, these things were all plaster and not meant to withstand the elements for extended periods of time. But I saw that part of this area was burned since I was there last, and while that could be from natural causes, there's a great chance it isn't. But regardless, things like that greatly speed up the wear and tear on these things. I figured I'd photograph here at night one more time (I photographed here in 2016 as well and have been back during the day a couple of times since then) before it's really gone south.
