did I hear pano time?
Posted By: Marc Langille, 03-18-2007, 01:07 PM

Just a quick one from the most brilliant sunsets I saw last December:

Stitched with PTGUI, using 6 shots with my DA 50-200, IIRC.

Cheers,
Marc

Marc, when I see shots like this and the the one from clarence, it makes me yearn for an opportunity to try. Great shot!

Thanks everyone, and I forgot to mention...

Almost all of my panos are images that are taken handheld - no tripod is used.

I may lose a little at the top and bottom of the image, but sometimes you must seize the moment. If the window of opportunity is narrow, you have no option. I "lock" my arms to ensure the perspective remains relatively constant too. I am careful in ensuring some overlap in each image, and try to stay vertical!

Cheers,
Mar

awesome colors... and handheld? Yikes - I'd hate to see what one of my attempts would be handheld... Very nice.

Marc,
I know you didn't see the same sunset but the similarities are strange.

How about a description of your arm 'lock'.

I too take pano shots hand held but end up cropping a lot of the top and bottom. Still a lot of shake so I try for higher ISO with handheld than what I use on a tripod. Less noise that way.

Don't forget that this was taken 3 months ago on December 13th, so it is coincidence...

Here's a single image from the pano - the EXIF is intact:

The original pano is quite large at 12117 x 3047.

I normally shoot ISO 400-800 to ensure high shutter speeds and clarity of the profiled foreground when it's darker and a longer focal length is employed.

The method I use to lock my arms - put my elbows right close to, but not quite on the sides of my torso, and stand in place. Then I simply pivoting enough to ensure some overlap from the previous image. Normally I'll shoot the series of images twice to be safe.
To draw an example, it's similar to how biathletes (ski/shoot) hold their arms when doing the standing shoot, as opposed to prone position.

I also have 20/10 and 20/15 vision (outcome of laser eye surgery). It's helped my macro work immensely too.

Marc, you are making me feel bad not learning how to do pano quick enough.

This is an amazing feel from a sunset

Thanks James! I am not trying to make anyone feel bad... It was spectacular, no question. Being there watching it was almost unreal...

Practice my friend! I know you'll be fine. And use Autostitch (free) or buy PTGUI to do the sewing...

Cheers,
Marc

That's a beautiful pano Marc, and pretty impressive for handheld! I do prefer the single shot though, I think it's perfect

Thank you!

It appears you and the Pentax Photo Gallery folks like my single image quite a bit - it's been accepted into the Gallery...
