great white egret pointing

identifying which egret this is is difficult. There are two very similar birds here in Australia: the Eastern Great Egret and the Intermediate Egret. They look very alike apart from size with the Intermediate Egret being about 2/3 the size of the Great. Not particularly useful unless the two are side by side. The clinching difference is the length of the gape - ie how far back their beak opening goes. The Intermediate Egret has a gape that ends before or under the eye. The Great Egret has a gape that extends well behind the eye. On this basis this appears to be the Eastern Great Egret.

Nice information to know and your analysis for determining To the type of Egret that you photographed. Good capture of the big bird in muted light with pretty colors in the water reflections.
