Here are some B&W conversions from some constrasty, bright pictures I took a week or so ago.

The 2nd one is my favorite. The flare adds a lot of drama to the shot with interesting perspective

Thanks, everyone, for the nice words and encouragement.

LaRee - I'm flattered that you'd ask for my technique, but it's pretty simple: I use the "Black and White Film" tool in Paint Shop Pro X or X2 on Tiff or JPEG images converted from RAW. This tool simply, simulates the colored filters (yellow, orange, red, blue, green) we used to lug around in our bags - with the added feature that filtration strength can be continuously diminished to zero, and - in the case of Pro X2 - continuous variation of color as well.
