First attempt at "micro" Wasp & Bee
Posted By: GLThorne, 03-20-2007, 07:52 PM

Not as good as many of the insects I've seen here, but I was pleased with them.

All shot with the 18-55 kit lens & Hoya +4 filter.

This is what we've always called a "Dew Bee" because of the size...

...and we've always called these "Nectar Wasps". These are on a flowering qunice tree at the pond and the flowers are about the size of a dime right now. Just for sizing up the winged workers.

Hope you enjoy .....

Thank you very much! The light was one of those things I didn't see until after I took the shot. A little something extra, you could say!!!

Thanks again!

Well, there is something called a sweat bee that actually is a bee. They like to lap up human sweat, thus the name. However, they are unaggressive and even if they did sting you, it wouldn't hurt much (perhaps unless you're allergic). Bees and wasps generally only sting when they feel threatened, i.e. you squash them or you appear to be threatening their nest. They have well-defined flight paths that you should avoid. Yes, I've learned that one by experience... several times over!
