a black and white day...
Posted By: khardur, 01-20-2009, 07:51 PM

Hey everyone.. went out briefly today, had some fun tonight doing some B&W conversions. Enjoy (critique always welcome)

1. Taken today with my new (used) SMC 55mm f1.8:

2. Today, with the 10-17 FE:

3. A few days ago, 55mm f/1.8

4. Not a new image, but a B&W conversion of this picture which I posted earlier this week. Nothing more than a simulated magenta filter.

There, I did my work for the day, off to bed I go.

Hey, Dan - I'm really taken with #2, but also enjoy the more abstract ones. These are outstanding B&W conversions - wish mine were this good.

These are all wonderful images! I really like the 3rd shot... it's mesmorising
Thanks, Kris. That was a tough one to shoot - I was lying on some ice covering the edge of the stream. No danger of falling in or anything, it was inches deep, but I didn't realize the ice on top had a little bit of water on top - when I got up I realized a few more minutes and I would have been soaked. Thankfully it only got through the first layer.

Nice series Dan - I like the first one , the second on reminds me of a cenote in Mexico but my favorite is the last one I love trees and that is a good one and BW was the way to go indeed.
Thanks Dave, I need to make a print of that last one...

Thanks axl. I guess you could say I spent most of my first 10 years with a camera shooting B&W, it's extremely fun and feels very natural to me.

Thanks Jer.

I don't know what software you like to use, but I highly recommend Cybia's (freeware!) B&W converter, it's called B&W Plus. I bought a different converter (also made by them, called Retrograde, which has grain and toning controls too) But the free one is great to mess around with because it has a nicer preview function.
