WALTZING MATILDA

from a ballad by "Banjo" Patterson

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolabah tree
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
Who'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me
Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
Who'll come a waltzing matilda with me
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
Who'll come a waltzing matilda with me

Down came a jumbuck to drink at the billabong
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee
And he sang as he stuffed that jumbuck in his tucker bag
You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me
Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me
& he sang as he stuffed that jumbuck in his tucker bag
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me

Down came the Squatter mounted on his thoroughbred
Down came the troopers one, two, three
Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tuckerbag
You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me
Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me
Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tuckerbag
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me

Up jumped the swagman and sprang into the billabong
You'll never take me alive said he
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by the billabong
"Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me"
Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
Who'll come a waltzing matilda with me
& his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong
Who'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Didn't want to spoil the above post with my ramblings,
This in many an opinion should be The National Anthem

Like they'll ever replace Khe Sanh.

Thanx for the "History" Taff.
I had only heard the Rolf Harris version of this song in the past.
I've always liked it, but didn't know it was that inspiring to you Aussies.

I sure prefer it to our current anthem.

Those poor roos have never been the same since the prim & proper brigade had them neutered.

Happy Australia Day everyone.

Thanks, Garth and same to you. Nice thought. You must've been up early to shoot and post this - the bloke over the road has only just put his flag out.

Jalena Dokic did us proud last night. I certainly woke up feeling good. But now I'm listening to the cricket and thinking about aiming a marine flare at the neighbour's flag. Sheesh.

Happy Australia Day to Aussies, worldwide.
Waltzing Matilda is the "unofficial National Anthem" I reckon, but at least, if it were promoted, Aussies would know all the words.
Not many know the full version of Advance Australia Fair!

Who did that version of Advance Australia Fair with ring Joyce as part of the lyrics?
And the history behind Waltzing Matilda goes back to the shearer strikes of the early 1890s.

I don't know what was wrong with 'God save the Queen'. She is our head of state after all.

Arise Sir Mickhs,
for you have done your Queen a service. I trust your armor is flame proof?

Hmmm I remember SexPistols doing a rather energetic version of God Save the Queen, I wonder what they could do to spice up Advance Australia Fair.

Nice response!

But seriously, a song about a sheep stealer as a national anthem? Get real! What with 'girts' and 'jumbucks', it really says a lot about Australians taste in music and lyrics!

Give me Khe Sanh anyday!
