Snow day... back to the zoo
Posted By: Bud, 01-27-2009, 09:24 PM

5 inches of snow seemed like a good enough reason to stop by the Cincinnati Zoo again and check out the activity.

All shots with K20D and DA55-300 or FA77 ltd

I'm not sure if the cheetahs thought I was a zoo keeper... or lunch.
DA55-300

None of the critters seemed to be enjoying the weather as much as this guy...
DA55-300

I stepped into the Cat House to warm up a little and found a use for the FA 77 ltd with this little guy... it's a Sand Cat... cool little animal. Then the freezing rain started... and I was done for the day. The good news... there's 6 more inches of snow in the forecast for tomorrow ;-)

Nice shots, Bud. I really, really like #2! Little different shooting weather than the Shenandoah shoot.
Thanks, Tom! I'll bet Shenandoah is pretty spectacular right now... I'd love to see that area covered in snow.

With the season approaching winter, I thought it was fun to have a look at these older pictures. All good of cause, really seems like a great zoo

Well Sune, glad you brought this one back - I missed it then, but love it now!
Stunning cheetah captures.
Perfect setting for the portraits.
With a touch of PP, they'd be PPG entries for sure.

Sune - The Cincinnati Zoo is very nice and they do some great work with endangered species and public education about wildlife in general. It's one the United States' oldest zoos and it is a fantastic setting for captive animal photgraphy, because the enclosures are designed so that the majority of them provide very unobstructed views of the animals.

I, for one, am lookign forward to another "snow day" at the zoo I just received notice from the PR department there that they will be using several of my donated images for their quarterly magazine and upcoming winter promotions I'll share here when the magazine is published next month.

Thanks!

Bud

Thanks, Ash! 9 months later, I can look at these and see that they might benefit from a little more "pop" in Photoshop. I'm curious...what, exactly, would be your suggestions?

Thanks!

Bud

Hey, I've seen that bear before and that fallen tree ...

Nice images Bud.

Here is a little PP I tried using Paint Shop Pro X

1) I tried to balance the bright background with the cat by (a) duplicating the layer, (b) desaturating the duplicate, (c) changing the duplicate layer to a negative image, (d) set the blending mode to overlay (e) reduced the opacity to 55%. (f) merge layer down. This will look a little weird but trust me.

2) Unsharp Mask (USM) @ radius: 50. strength: 15 and clipping: 3

3) (a) Duplicate Layer and apply second USM treatment @ radius: 0.30. strength: 300 and clipping: 3 - (b)Desaturate (c) Set blend mode to Soft Light Blend (100% Opacity) (d) Merge layer down

4) Clarify Tool set to 1 (I think this is like shadows/highlights in Photoshop.

5) Merge all and save.

Tim
