A series of shots with DA*300 and 1.7x AF converter
Posted By: tcom, 01-30-2009, 11:46 AM

With some sunny weather this afternoon, I went out to make a few further shots with K20D, DA*300 and Pentax F 1.7x AF converter.

K20D, 510mm, 1/400s, f/10.0, 400iso

K20D, 510mm, 1/500s, f/10.0, 400iso

K20D, 510mm, 1/500s, f/10.0, 400iso

K20D, 510mm, 1/320s, f/9.0, 400iso
(this shot has just been converted from RAW, no further PP. The shot is available in full resolution on my flickr account, reacheable by clicking on the photo)

The big surprise this afternoon were the bohemian waxwings:

K20D, 510mm, 1/400s, f/8.0, 800iso

K20D, 510mm, 1/400s, f/8.0, 800iso

K20D, 510mm, 1/200s, f/8.0, 800iso

K20D, 510mm, 1/200s, f/8.0, 800iso

I do not know how you see these shots, but I am really satisfied with the results obtained with this combo. The 1.7x TC introduces a slightly reduced sharpness and a little bit of AC, but the end results remains very good.

Whoa!!!

Great series.

That first waxwing should be a shoe-in at the PPG.

Wonderful shots, those waxwing shots are great with the yellow fruit.

Great series! I especially like the waxwings images! Looks like the 300x1.7 combo works reall well! I Assume that it is the Pentax 1.7x?

Thank you for all your comments.

Yes, I used the Pentax F 1.7x AF converter on the DA*300, and the results are promising, looks like a great combo.

Brilliant shots. Exceptional results from that setup.
I am really "focussing" on the DA*300 All the shots I have seen from it show that it is a top lens.
One of these days perhaps

Nice tcom, colorful and sharp! I just started using my DA*300 + Tamron 1.4 TC. Looks like a high quality TC combined with the DA*300 makes for an excellent lens! Besides the quality, I love how easy the lens is to handhold for that long of a reach

Thank you both.

Toshi: yes, I was surprise how well I can hold that combo and still get quite sharp photos, even at 1/200s at 510mm!

Wow, Domique. Great colour and contrast from this combo. Besides, the bokeh are better than Fa* version for sure.

Now I am tempting to sell fa* version to get a Da one.

Thanks for all the comments.

As there were still a lot of fruits on the tree yesterday, I gave it another try today. Unfortunately, there is no sun today, I tried to add the AF-540FGZ flash unit.

So today: K20D, DA*300, Pentax F 1.7x AF converter, AF-540FGZ:

1/180s, f/6.7, 500iso

1/180s, f/6.7, 500iso (in full res on my flickr page)

1/180s, f/6.7, 500iso

1/180s, f/6.7, 500iso

1/180s, f/6.7, 500iso

Even a starling was here
1/180s, f/6.7, 500iso

But the whole combo: K20D, DA*300, Pentax F 1.7x AF converter, AF-540FGZ gets pretty heavy for longer photo session, especially when hand holding it.
