Guitars anyone?
Posted By: mikeSF, 01-30-2009, 05:07 PM

I am new here and have seen so many great photos of all sorts of subject matter, but not very many guitars. As an avid guitarist, I enjoy taking pictures of my guitars. They usually sit very still for a portrait and are patient with all my camera tweaking.

Keep in mind, i play the guitar better than i take pictures. I am just 3 weeks into SLR photography, a complete newbie.

I just got an M 50mm f/1.7 this week and set up some shots of a few guitars using just indoor light and some natural sunlight from the adjacent room. I had to move the guitars around a bit to minimize the room reflections in the lacquer.

I was using f/2 and f/2.8 for the most part 1/8-1/4 sec shutter, 200 ISO. I do not know what settings are ideal, so just experimenting at this point. Any suggestions on how to make them better are always welcomed. Should i aim for a brighter room and smaller aperture?

Anybody else play guitar? Here are some jazz guitars:

Gibson LP Studio & Crafter

Some of mine, as promised. A bit dusty, but that doesn't affect the sound....

Landola

Love this thread! All nice guitars and some very good photos of gutars also. Here's my contribution to the bunch. An old Landola, don't know if anyone of you has heard of them but they make very nice guitars.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the extra string on Mike's guitars! That is some very cool playing on the Youtube clip. I thought about getting a seven-string guitar myself once, but that was when I was younger and played in a heavy metal band

I have been meaning to shoot some of my Brother-in-Law's guitars ... he has a nice little collection on his study wall. It's something I have been meaning to get a chance to have a shot at.

thanks. i switched over to 7-string a couple years back to get a little more bottom end and found it surprisingly easy to make the transition. I just pretended it was a 6-string with a few extra notes that could be used or completely ignored.
