Natives in the park
Posted By: xjjohnno, 02-01-2009, 01:49 PM

The park up the end of the street has mainly native plants, and with the plants come native birds. I know a few of the folk here aren't keen on bird pics so they'll have to bear with my self indulgence.
Of course no walk in the park is complete without the mandatory pigeon photo, in this instance I've opted for one of the natives.

I'm all for bird photos! You've got different pigeons than we do and the parrot is beautiful.

Very nice ones there.

The first shot is rather rare and local and I cannot recall its name...

I am surprised that they are out and about under such intense heat!

Nice set of images. Its always amazing what we can find in our own backyards!

BTW, the top image is a crested pigeon - one of the bronze wings that inhabit most of the dry regions of Australia. Interestingly, the common bronzewing is a desert species that has moved successfully into suburban habitats.

The last one is more commonly known as a Rainbow Lorikeet - they certainly make a racket when they feed - as soon as any Eucalypt comes into flower! Another link for those interested.

Well I'm living in the inner city, try North Melbourne, around sunset the lorikeets go absolutely beserk this time of year, belting around the neighbourhood. I'm hoping this drought finishes off the plain and elm trees planted around local streets and they get replaced by natives, then there will be quite a lot more native species returning.
