Inferno II (11 photos)
Posted By: Rense, 02-03-2009, 01:08 PM

It was a hard time to choose between the photos I made yesterday, when I had a photoshooting at a heathland fire, I made too much pictures obviously. So, here are some from those I consider to be the better ones....

Comments & critiques welcome, as always .

As an old wildland firefighter, I can appreciate what both you and those guys your photographing are going through. Nice shots.

Question, how do you keep the ash, dust, smoke, everything from coating ever last inch of your camera. I know when we came in from a day of burning, there wasn't a square inch that wasn't covered in black soot, what's your secret?

Redpigeons, thank you! It realy was great to be there. Since it was all controlled, there was no real danger.

Oatman, thanks for your words. Ash and dust were not realy problems, but the smoke was. However, most of the time we were downwind, so it was just fun (and work of course ).

Thanks James for your compliments. And yes, no one was hurt. I enjoyed being near to the fire, because it was a cold day with quite a lot of wind, so it was realy cold.

Cool, one word or warning, controled or not, one is never fully "safe" even during a controled burn. We had one lit on about 200 achers of land, and the wind out of nowhere switched from a north blow to a south blow. It was only because of some quick thinking (and several fast trucks with freshly filled water tanks) that our controled fire didn't get too much out of hand.

Be careful my friend, and enjoy, and if you get the chance, take some pictures of everything just after its burned, and then come back a month later and take that same shot (in color). I did that to a tree. It was standing alone in a field of barren black. Came back a month later, there stood the tree, but everywhere around it was the most lush looking green you've ever seen.

Daz, Josh, and Georg, thank you all for your compliments! Oatman, the firebrigade with wich we had this burning are very well trained and they know the local situation very good, so I never felt unsave. I think they are great!
