Thank you for the explanation

First of all, all bugs on my pictures are NOT dead
Till the end of last season I used internal flash with homemade diffuser (I used up to 2-3 tubes - 31mm and 13mm),
diffuser for internal flash
but now it's not enough light for 2 sets of tubes, so I use external flash Metz 48Af with huge diffuser. I attach this flash to synchro cable. Everything is placed on homemade constrution like this (unfortunatelly I got picture of the first version of it)

Usually I take pictures early in the morning, so insects are calm and it is easy to make a photo.
But if bugs are sprayed with cold water, they freeze for a second, so there is time to take a shot.
Brilliant way to "Freeze" them, I had never even thought of that. Thank you for the lighting tips too... much appreciated...

A key to success is to know how the dragonflies behaves. They fly around their own teritory and almost always they come back to the same place.
Usually, before I decide to take pictures, I'm trying to observe them. As I know where dragonflies most often come back I take pictures
I always use manual focus.

This photo was taken with use of three blendes (made of white paper). I attached them to my diffuser. Thats why There is so much light below the bug

This butterfly I found in my garden I used Tamron 75-300 with 21mm extension tube, just to see if it can handle the photo there is only natural light

In Poland, there is no problem to get auto extension tubes. Internet store, in my city (Cracow), sells exact the same model I use. Unfortunatelly shipping cost would be unprofitable.
Below is the link, directly to tubes in this shop

Well so much for the assumption the Tam 75-300 is a mediocre lens. Obviously in the right hands (not mine! LOL) it is quite capable

Tamron is obviously not a perfect lens, but I think it's worth to buy. Another example from this lens.
