An old pegan custom
Posted By: fejker, 02-27-2009, 03:18 AM

Kurentovanje is a Slovenian tradition originating from the pagan times. The main figure (Korant/Kurent) is dressed in sheep skin with a large mask usually made of painted wood, covered in sheep skin and feathers. It carries large bells which produce sufficient noise while the character is jumping and dancing to scare off evil spirits and winter. (supposedly)
The Korant tradition is carried from generation to generation and the boys start wearing costumes when they are very young. The stick that they are holding usually has hedgehog spikes at one end and on the other they attach women’s handkerchiefs … the more handkerchiefs the Korant has, the more hearts he has won. Times are changing and now even women dress up as Korants.
There are some pictures of other traditional masks too, like the whip cracker, farmers and storks. The dildo sisters are there just for fun. :P

Hey, thanks for sharing the custom, and the wonderful pics. It's interesting what animals get associated with different things... in Scandinavia the santa figure is a goat...

Oh and I'm feeling sick, please send those nurses...

Being from the same geographical region, I have seen my fair share of odd customs I could never understand.

Good photojournalism, here.

JUST WHAT THE H E doublehockeystick DOES THE SECOND NURSE HAVE in her front pocket?

Nesster, are you SURE you want a visit from those nurses?

Considering that the Slovenes have not been Pagan since the 8th century that shows an amazing cultural continuity.
