Actually most of these shots were not intended to be keepers.
They were just test shots to determine the best configuration of extension, adjust the sights, mounts, barlows etc that work best.
So it was convenient to try these different setups on the birds in the yard and around the feeder. If it didn't work out it was easy enough to go back in the house and fuss with the hardware some more and try again out in the yard. With all the little bits and pieces I was working with it's not the kind of thing you want to do out in the field.
Anyway that's why these shots are so close up. Not out of choice. The focal length of most of my glass is not suited for back yard birds. I usually shoot at distances beyond what my yard allows and in a bird's natural habitat ideally.
